My Knee Replacement Story

I Was 60 Days Away From Knee Surgery. Then I Found Something I Hadn't Tried.

The date was circled on the calendar in my kitchen. September the eighteenth. That was the day I was supposed to have my right knee replaced. I'm sixty-six. I'd been bone on bone in both knees for about three years by then, and when the surgeon finally said it was time, I didn't argue with him. I just asked him for one thing.

Sixty days.

I don't know exactly why I asked. I think I wanted to feel like I'd tried everything before somebody cut my leg open. He said fine, we'll book it for September, and I went home with a date on my fridge and two months to fill.

This is what I did with them.

I want to be honest about where I was starting from, because I know how this sounds.

I wasn't someone who hadn't tried. I'd planned my whole day around where I could sit down. My granddaughter would ask me to get on the floor and play and I'd say next time, every time, until she stopped asking. My husband started doing the shopping because I couldn't stand in the queue.

I had the injections. The first one gave me three months and I thought I'd found the answer. The second one gave me nothing at all, and nobody had warned me that happens. And I'd taken turmeric every single day for two years. Not once could I point to a day and say, that helped.

So by the time I asked for those sixty days, I'd already decided the whole business of supplements was a waste of money. I was wrong about that, but not in the way you'd think. I wasn't wrong about the supplements. I was wrong about what I'd been asking them to do.

I couldn't sleep, the knees always got worse at night, so I was on the knee forums at two in the morning, the way you do.

And a woman on there wrote something out that no doctor, no surgeon and no pharmacist had ever said to me in three years.

She said: stop thinking of your knee as one thing that's worn out.

A knee is three separate parts

And they don't wear at the same rate. I read it three times. Then I got a pen.

The cushion:

The cartilage between the bones. It's the padding, and it's what people mean when they say bone on bone - the padding has worn thin enough that the bones are closer together than they should be.

The nutrient your body uses to support cartilage is glucosamine. That's the one everybody's heard of. It's the one in most of the bottles on the shelf at the pharmacy.

Key takeaway: Glucosamine supports the cushion. That's one part of three - and it's the only part most joint supplements address.

The fluid:

Inside the joint there's a fluid that keeps everything sliding smoothly instead of catching. When people say their knee feels like it's grinding, or dry, or sticking - that's the fluid. What supports it is hyaluronic acid. And here's the part that stopped me: hyaluronic acid is the same thing they inject into your knee in a gel shot. The shots I'd had. It also comes in a capsule, and almost nobody had told me that.

Key takeaway: Hyaluronic acid supports the fluid. Check the bottle you're taking now — most don't contain it.

The connective tissue:
The ligaments and tendons around the joint. They're what take your whole body weight every single time you push yourself up out of a chair. What supports them is MSM.

And that was the moment it landed for me. I'd been taking glucosamine on its own, some years, and turmeric on its own, other years, and expecting a whole knee to change.

Key takeaway: MSM supports the connective tissue. Three parts, three different needs. Supporting one and expecting all three to improve is where most of us go wrong.

This was the question I'd been carrying for two years, and it turns out there were two answers.

The first is that turmeric was never meant to be doing what I thought it was doing. Turmeric - along with boswellia and white willow bark - helps with the soreness that sits on top of the joint. That's a real thing, and it matters. But it isn't feeding the cushion, or the fluid, or the tissue. It was never going to.

The second answer is that turmeric on its own barely gets into you at all. Your body absorbs very little of it unless it's taken with black pepper extract. Two years of tablets and I doubt much of it made it past my stomach.

So I hadn't been taking a bad supplement. I'd been taking a good one, badly, for the wrong job.

A note if you've been told bone on bone

The most common thing I read on those forums, and I read a lot of them that month, was some version of: once you're bone on bone, none of this applies to you.

I believed that too. It's why I'd stopped looking.

But bone on bone describes the cushion. It doesn't say anything about the fluid, and it doesn't say anything about the connective tissue. Those are two separate parts of your knee, still doing their jobs, and nobody had ever asked whether they were being supported.

That was true of my knee at three years bone on bone. It may be true of yours.

So I did the obvious thing. I went shopping for all of it.

Glucosamine in one bottle. Hyaluronic acid in another. MSM in a third. Then turmeric, then boswellia, then willow bark, then the black pepper so the turmeric would actually absorb. Six bottles. Around eleven capsules a day.

I sat looking at that basket and I knew myself. I'd do it for a fortnight, I'd forget the lunchtime ones, and by week three the bottles would be at the back of the cupboard with everything else I'd bought and quit. That's when I went back to the thread and noticed three or four different women all naming the same thing.

They all said they had taken Strides Daily Joint Support, and it's all seven of them in one capsule properly dosed and standardized.

I read the back of that bottle like I was studying for a test:

  • Glucosamine — the cushion
  • Hyaluronic acid — the fluid
  • MSM — the connective tissue
  • Turmeric, boswellia and white willow bark — the day-after soreness
  • Black pepper extract — so the rest of it actually absorbs

Seven things. Two capsules a day, with food, instead of eleven.

Made in the United States in a cGMP facility, batch tested, and shellfish-free - which mattered to me, because two of the glucosamine bottles I'd nearly bought were made from shellfish and I can't take those.

The results of the 60 Day Test

I'd promised myself sixty days and I wrote down what changed.

Weeks one and two — nothing. I want to be straight about that, because I nearly stopped. There was nothing I could point to. The bottle says it builds over the first fortnight and that is exactly what it did, which is to say it did nothing I could feel.

Week five. I came down my own stairs with my hand just resting on the railing. Not gripping it. Resting on it. I stood at the bottom and realised what had just happened.

Week seven. I got down on the floor with my granddaughter, and I got back up on my own.

Day sixty. I stopped for three days, just to see. By the third morning the stiffness was back in the first few steps — not the pain I'd started with, nothing like it, but enough that I knew what had been doing the work. I started again that day and I never booked the replacement.

Why we send three bottles, not two

The test is sixty days. Two bottles covers it exactly. So why is there a third?

Because of what happens on day sixty-one.

Bottle one: days 1 to 30. The build.
You will most likely feel nothing this month. That is not the product failing, it's how it works, and it's the month most people quit. Take it anyway.

Bottle two: days 31 to 60. The answer.
This is where the small things show up. The stairs. The first steps in the morning. Getting up off the floor.

Bottle three: the proof bottle.
On day sixty, stop taking it for three days.

If you don't feel any difference in those three days, it didn't work for you. Send all three bottles back — opened, half-empty, doesn't matter, and take the full refund.

If it comes back in those three days, that's your answer, and you'll want to start again immediately. Bottle three is already in your cupboard. You don't spend a fortnight going backwards while you wait for a delivery.

That's the whole point

The third bottle only ever gets opened by the people it worked for.

If it doesn't work for you, you're not stuck with a spare. You're not sending two back and eating the cost of one. The guarantee covers the entire order, all three bottles, and they can go back empty.

One bottle is thirty days. That's half a test, and half a test tells you nothing — which is why we don't recommend it.
